Baphomet - name given to an idol which was purportedly
worshipped by the Knights Templar, who were an order of
"Christian" knights charged with protecting the lives and
property of Christian pilgrims as they traveled to and from
the Holy Land. Baphomet's existence came to light in 1307
during interrogations of the knights after the order was
accused of heresy by King Philip IV of France. Regardless
of whether or not the story is true, or whether or not
Baphomet really existed, it was adopted by satanists, such
as Eliphas Levi, (real name Alphonse Louis Constant), whose
drawing of Baphomet, (above), has come to be regarded as
the 'Mona Lisa' of satanism. This same image is now used
to depict Satan on the tarot cards. Some scholars suggest
that the name Baphomet may have actually resulted from a
corruption of the name Mahomet or Mohammed, as a slur
against the Islamic religion, whom the 'Christian'
crusaders of course hated.
