Martin Luther, (1483 - 1546), was a German monk, Reformer and the founder of Protestantism. In 1517 Luther nailed his 95 Theses of Contention to the Wittenberg Door. Like his contemporaries, William Tyndale and John Calvin, Luther fell under the wrath of the powerful Roman Catholic Church when he dared to proclaim the doctrine of Salvation by Grace alone, and not by good works. In the months following the Diet of Worms Council in 1521, which was designed to martyr him, Luther went into exile. It was during that time that he translated the New Testament into German from Erasmus' Greek/Latin New Testament, and then published it in September of 1522. It was under Luther's shadow in Cologne and Worms, that English Reformer, William Tyndale, worked to complete his New Testament in English.
