The Patriarch Isaac was the promised son born to Abraham and Sarah, fourteen years after the birth of Ishmael by the Egyptian handmaid, Hagar. Abraham was one hundred years old at the time, and his wife Sarah was ninety, thus showing the physical impossibility of them having a child at that age. Isaac means 'he laughs': "Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?" Genesis 17:17, KJV And also: "And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken. For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him. And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him." Genesis 21:1-5, KJV Although Ishmael had been born first, Isaac was the seed of promise through whom the Lord would give Abraham's descendants the land of Canaan. In a spiritual sense, like Isaac, we Christians are also the children of faith as Paul tells us: "Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham...For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:7, 26, KJV
