Endtime Prophecy Net - Bible Tidbits

The word 'Gaia', or 'Gaea', is derived from ancient Greek mythology, and refers to the so-called goddess of the Earth. Today, it is used by New Age thought advocates to represent the Earth as a living, sentient being, which will soon purge herself of destructive men. This is a lie and a deception which totally contradicts the Bible. Man was God's crowning creation, and He made man to have dominion over the Earth as we see in this verse: "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." Genesis 1:28, KJV This does not mean that man was meant to defile and pollute the Earth as he has done; yet still, the New Age concept that the Earth will soon cast off humanity like some unwanted parasite is totally absurd. The Scriptures tell us that one day in the future, God will indeed purge the Earth by fire, but it will be God who does it, and not the Earth itself: "But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men...But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." 2 Peter 3:7, 10, KJV
