The Hebrew word 'Elohim' means rulers, judges, divine ones, angels or gods. It is the plural form of 'El', which means 'God', as in the phrase 'El Shaddai'; that is 'God Almighty'. In the Book of Genesis, where we find the famous utterance 'In the beginning God...', the form used is the plural 'Elohim'' although it has come to be understood in the singular form. However, if we compare a few other verses, it becomes apparent that 'Gods' would be more correct. For example, verse 26 reads: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness..." Genesis 1:26a, KJV Please notice the 'we' and the 'us'. As the WordWeaver explains, the act of Creation appears to have been a joint effort by God the Father, and Jesus Christ, His Son. Perhaps God instructed, while Jesus did the actual building of the universe. This is supported by these verses: "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men." John 1:3,4, KJV And also: "And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:" Ephesians 3:9, KJV And finally: "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence." Colossians 1:16-18, KJV For more info, please read the series 'Is Jesus The Only Begotten Son Of God?'.
