Endtime Prophecy Net - Bible Tidbits

The word 'crucifixion' is derived from the Latin 'cruz', meaning cross, and 'figere', meaning to fasten; thus, crucifixion was an extremely cruel and painful form of Roman torture and means of bringing about one's death by either nailing him, tying him, or nailing and tying him to a tree, cross or stake of some kind. While the actual word 'crucifixion' is not found anywhere in the New Testament, the words 'crucify' and 'crucified' are used many times. They are derived from the Greek words, stauroo', which means to stake, drive down stakes, or to fortify with driven stakes, from 'sustauroo', which means to crucify alone with, and also from 'anastauroo', which means to raise up upon a cross, to crucify. For more info, please use the keyword 'crucify' or 'crucified'.
