The act of circumcision refers to the process of cutting away the foreskin of a male's sexual organ. This was first mandated by the Lord in Genesis chapter seventeen, as a physical sign in the flesh of His covenant with Abraham regarding multiplying his seed, and giving his descendants the land of Canaan: "This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed." Genesis 17:10-12, KJV While physical circumcision is still practiced today, as the Apostle Paul tells us, what is most important to the Lord is spiritual circumcision of the mind, heart and spirit when we become new creatures through our faith in, and obedience to, Jesus Christ: "Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God." 1 Corinthians 7:19, KJV And also: "For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love." Galatians 5:6, KJV And finally: "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature." Galatians 6:15, KJV
