While there are several men in the Bible by the name of Barnabas, the one with whom most people are familiar, is the one mentioned in the Book of Acts. Barnabas, whose real name was Joses, (Greek Ioses, Hebrew Ioseph), was a Levite, and a native of Cyprus. After joining the Apostles in Jerusalem, he not only introduced Paul to the Apostles, but he also became one of Paul's faithful travelling companions until the time of their sharp disagreement: "And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet...And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus...As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them...And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision" Acts 4:36,37, 9:26-27, 13:2, Galatians 2:9, KJV
