When Jesus said blessed are the poor in spirit, He was referring to those who walk humbly before God. That is why in the Old Testament, from which Jesus quoted quite often, it states: "Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off." Psalms 138:6, KJV As well as: "Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud." Proverbs 16:19, KJV Thus, speaking of Himself, Jesus said: "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." Matthew 11:29, KJV So as the Apostle Paul tells us, not only did Jesus temporarily forsake the riches of His Father's Kingdom in Heaven, and dwell amongst the poorest of the poor on Earth, but He also humbled Himself before His Father, and did His Father's Will: "For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich." 2 Corinthians 8:9, KJV As well as: "And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." Philippians 2:8, KJV
