As you may have heard, this past Saturday, September 24th, current Russian President Dmitri A. Medvedev announced at a United Russia party convention that he would not offer resistance to current Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin replacing him as Russia's president in the upcoming Russian presidential election in March of 2012. While Medvedev's close allies and supporters expressed disappointment at his announcement, as a whole, thousands of United Russia party members who attended the convention welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm. While on the surface, considerable division exists between the leaders of the seventeen nations of the European Union which currently form a part of the so-called eurozone, and while the voting public of some of those nations continue to express strong resistance to further integration with the European Union and the eurozone -- because doing so will encroach upon their national sovereignty -- according to a news article that I read the other day entitled Europeans Talk of Sharp Change in Fiscal Affairs behind the scenes, certain powerful European leaders -- such as German chancellor Angela Merkel and French president Nicolas Sarkozy -- have in fact been working towards even tighter fiscal integration between the nations of the eurozone.
