Love, Mercy and Forgiveness

If ever there was a divine litmus test which exposes the sinfulness of our human nature, and reveals how much we each fail to live by God’s Divine Standard, surely it is in the areas of forgiveness, mercy and love. While God commands us to love and to forgive those who offend us, and even to go the extra mile by praying for those who wrong us in some way, our sinful old man of the flesh just doesn’t want to have anything to do with it.

The old man — who is rooted in human pride — doesn’t want to forgive or to forget; and he most certainly doesn’t want to pray for those who have wronged him. In fact, quite often, our old man isn’t happy with anything short of revenge. “Make them pay for what they did to you!” he screams out.

I know that I am not alone when I say that this is a battle which we all constantly face as Christians. We truly want to live by God’s Law of Love, but oh that old man!

Forgiveness does not come easy; and the greater the offense, the more difficult it is for us to forgive; but then we are reminded of what Jesus said in the Gospels:

“But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Matthew 6:15, KJV

God couldn’t have placed the bar any higher than that. He set a standard which forces us to learn to forgive, or else.

I know that in my own life, there have been a few incidents where I feel that I have been wronged and treated unfairly. Despite the passage of many years in a few cases, and despite my knowledge of God’s Word, when those bad memories occasionally surge forward in my mind, my evil heart is quick to lash out all over again at those persons who were involved, figuratively speaking. Truly, the Prophet Jeremiah spoke the truth when he wrote:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
Jeremiah 17:9, KJV

And, of course, as Jesus Himself said:

“But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.”
Matthew 15:18-20, KJV

Perhaps it is because to forgive is not a human attribute, but rather a Divine Attribute; and until we have truly been perfected in God’s Love — which oft times means being honest with ourselves, and recognizing our own dismal, sinful condition, and our own need for forgiveness and mercy — we simply do not possess the power to forgive and to love others as we should.

It is a daily uphill battle to live in a Christ-like manner. There are so many things working against us; mainly our own selves. As you may recall, even the Apostle Paul recognized this ongoing battle between the Spirit, and the sinful desires of the flesh. Thus he wrote:

“For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”
Romans 7:14-25, KJV

So by God’s Grace, through the power of Christ working in us and through us, we will each strive to do better, and to live more like Him.

Gaddafi’s Brutal Violence – Will Libya Unravel Next?

As I write this blog entry, violence continues to escalate in the lands of the Middle East, particularly in the North African country of Libya where pro-government security forces, the police and the military have killed at least hundreds of people over the past five days. According to the latest news reports, even funeral mourners have not remained immune to the violence. As they have marched in their processions, carrying their dead from the previous days’ violence to their final resting place, they have been attacked and killed by government forces loyal to long-time dictator Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi — or al-Gaddafi as some people prefer to spell it.

While the current unrest originally centered in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi — which is not only Libya’s second largest city after Tripoli, but also a long-time political trouble spot for Colonel Gaddafi — it has now spread to other Libyan cities as well, including the capital of Tripoli itself.

As has occurred in other Arab and Muslim nations in recent weeks, in an effort to appease the angry masses, the government of Libya made lukewarm offers of reform. In a late-night televised speech, Gaddafi’s son and heir-apparent, Seif al-Islam el-Qaddafi, disclosed the particulars of the reform package; but his speech was repeatedly highlighted by a strong warning that “Libya is not Tunisia or Egypt”.

The message was clear; Colonel Gaddafi will not allow to happen in Libya, what has already occurred in Libya’s neighbors to the East and to the West. The government will fight back and crush the opposition. As Seif al-Islam el-Qaddafi stated during his speech, “We will fight until the last man, until the last woman, until the last bullet”.

When Libya’s democracy revolution began last week, I was rather dubious that the Libyans would be as successful as the Tunisians and the Egyptians appear to have been. The events of the past few days — which have been marked by so much government-supported violence — seemed to bolster my belief. However, according to the latest news reports, there is a glimmer of hope, and it may possibly be that the tide is beginning to turn against Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi.

For example, it is being claimed that in Benghazi, certain “special forces” assisted the protesters — even lending them their tanks — so that they were able to overcome the local headquarters of the state security services. Furthermore, the well-known pan-Arab satellite television station, Al Jazeera, is reporting that two of Libya’s most powerful tribes — the al-Warfalla and the al-Zuwayya — have turned against Colonel Gaddafi, and are now demanding that he leave the country.

So while Gaddafi and his thugs continue to try to overpower the people through fear, intimidation and brutal violence, all they are doing is creating new enemies for themselves, amongst those who were once loyal to them.

The brutal violence that is now occurring in Libya is totally unacceptable. That any leader would be so desperate to hold on to power that he would be willing to kill his own people is an absolute disgrace and a crime. Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi has been in power for forty-two long years. What more does he want? It is time for him — and his family — to step down now, and to allow the people of Libya the opportunity to forge their own democratic way forward, without fear of brutal government reprisal in any form.

But there is a much larger question looming here, and that is: What is God doing?

As I have mentioned before, I have no doubt that He is doing something. No one — not the governments of the Middle East themselves, or Western analysts — could have foreseen or predicted the current wave of protest which is sweeping the lands of North Africa and the Middle East. As some news agencies are reporting, even a few months ago, such events were totally unthinkable. They simply weren’t on anyone’s radar at all. But then, suddenly, with just one small spark — and it was indeed a literal spark when a man set himself on fire in Tunisia in protest of his dire financial situation — a raging fire of protest has been ignited.

So I have no doubt that there is a supernatural element, a Divine Element, to all of this. To think that people only armed with their desire for freedom, and their conviction for change, could overcome two powerful governments which were armed to the teeth, defies the imagination. If the people of Libya also beat the odds — and it may possibly happen — then I will become even more convinced that God has set some unseen plan in motion, and I suspect that it may have a lot to do with the final events of the Endtime.

So keep your eyes on the Middle East, folks; because as I have stated before, God’s Word indicates that it is there where the final events of the Endtime will unfold. The players are taking the stage, soon the curtain may drop, and what will we then behold?

BRUTAL CRACKDOWN — The Middle East Offers Its Solution

Soon after the civil unrest in Egypt began, and new flames of protest began to erupt in other countries of the Middle East, I stated to my readers that, in my view, there was/is only one of two ways in which this will all end: Either the corrupt, oppressive governments of the Middle East will acquiesce to the will of their people, and embrace democratic reform, or else they will brutally attack and oppress their constituents in a bloody wave of violence. My hunch was that it would be the latter. Sadly, that has now turned out to be the case.

As I said before, make no mistake. After the “Jasmine Revolution” resulted in the fall of Tunisian dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, and the “January 25th Revolution” resulted in the fall of Egyptian dictator Muhammad Hosni Mubarak, the corrupt leaders of the Middle East were shaking in their boots. They all realized that they could be next, and that is why a few of them — such as King Abdullah II of Jordan, President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority, President Ali Abdullah Saleh of Yemen, etc. — made half-hearted efforts to convince their people that they were open to democratic reform, and that they were willing to address the complaints of their constituents.

It is now plain to see that it was all a farce, and a poor one at that. From Algeria, to Tunisia, to Libya, to Egypt, to Jordan, to Yemen, to Iraq, to Iran, to Bahrain, every single one of these governments has reacted in the same way to the demands of their people; and that can be summarized in three words: violent, brutal crackdowns!

As I write these lines, people are dying by at least the dozens, or by the hundreds, at the hands of pro-government forces in each of these lands. From Algiers, Algeria, to Benghazi, Libya to Tehran, Iran, blood is being spilled by the military, by the police and by pro-government supporters of corrupt leaders who refuse to step down.

For now, there appears to be no end in sight to the bloody violence which has enveloped the Middle East. The more blood that is spilled, the more the people become enraged. But the question is: How much more are they willing to take? How many more people will be willing to sacrifice their lives in order to bring down their corrupt governments? Will they endure as the people of Tunisia and Egypt have endured, or will they be mercilessly crushed?

Speaking of Tunisia and Egypt, while the key initial phase of their revolutions may be past, don’t think for a minute that the objectives of the people have been fully met. For example, in Tunisia, the people are still demanding that the interim government resign, but without success; while in Egypt, reports have surfaced of continuing imprisonment and torture by the military after Hosni Mubarak’s fall. These acts have only served to fuel suspicions regarding the true intentions of the Egyptian military. Personally, from the little that I know, I still don’t trust them, and I continue to suspect that they are playing one shrewd game with the populace; but I am not Egyptian, I don’t live there, and I don’t personally know the people who are involved . . . but I do know human nature, because God’s Word — the Bible — sums it up for us quite well when it says the following:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
Jeremiah 17:9, KJV

Before concluding this commentary, I do feel that it is important that I clarify my own position regarding the current violence and unrest in the Middle East. As my long-time readers already know, I am not a man of violence. I don’t support violence of any kind, for any cause, no matter how noble that cause may seem in the eyes of the secular world. As Jesus Himself said to Peter on that fateful night:

“. . . Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.”
Matthew 26:52b, KJV

And there are many other verses in the Bible — which I share in my many articles — which support my position of non-violence.

I also believe that God raises up the leaders that He wants in place for a time, in order to fulfill His Divine Purposes, whatever they may be, even evil rulers. This position is likewise supported by a number of verses in the Bible. Consider these example verses:

“Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.”
Psalms 75:5-7, KJV

“Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his: And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:”
Daniel 2:20-21, KJV

Such was the case with King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon, for example. He was a pagan, evil, violent king; and yet, he served as an instrument in God’s Hands, to punish the wayward, backslidden Jews of Judah about 2,600 years ago. In fact, in the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, God even referred to Nebuchadnezzar as His servant, because that evil king was performing His will, by serving as His instrument of judgment against the Jews. Consider this verse:

“And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him.”
Jeremiah 27:6, KJV

So, I firmly believe that God gives people the government that they deserve, and apparently need. In fact, sometimes these cruel, oppressive governments serve to break and humble their people, particularly when they are in rebellion against the Lord, as the vast majority of the people of the Middle East currently are. Let’s not forget that aside from the small minorities of oppressed Christians who live in some of these countries, the vast majority of the people of the Middle East are Muslims who soundly reject the Messiahship of Jesus Christ. As I point out in my articles, similar to the Jews, they don’t even believe that God has a son.

In short, we should not question the workings of the Lord, even if we do not understand them. If anything, we should pray that through their suffering, some of these people will truly come to know the God of the Bible, and the Salvation which He offers them through the atoning Sacrifice of His dear Son, Jesus Christ.

Michelle Obama, Breast-feeding and Michele Bachmann

I was just reading a news article about the latest uproar over first lady Michelle Obama’s support for breast-feeding, and the strong negative reaction from Michele Bachmann and other critics.

Quite frankly, I find the whole situation utterly ridiculous. Some people will argue and disagree, just for the sake of arguing and disagreeing, or else just to see their name in the headlines. Aren’t there more serious issues to be concerned about, or to argue and debate about in the USA?

The irony of this situation is that even Michele Bachmann admits that she breast-fed her five children.

To make things worse, then Sarah Palin obviously had to add her two cents worth to the debate — and, of course, see her name in the news again — by taking her own jab at Michelle Obama by saying “No wonder Michelle Obama is telling everybody, ‘You better breast-feed your baby.’ . . . Yeah, you’d better, because the price of milk is so high right now.” It is hard to respect Ms. Palin when she makes such air-head, idiotic statements. I would have given her more credit if she had stayed out of the debate and said nothing.

I just have one final thing to say regarding this issue:

Breast-feeding: It’s what God intended!

Father knows best!

KJV – King James Version – Bible Verse List – Dead Are Unconscious

“For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?”
Psalms 6:5, KJV

The reason why there is no remembrance of the Lord in the grave, is because there is no conscious thought. In fact, in Psalm 88, which also speaks of death and the grave, it is referred to as “the land of forgetfulness”, as we see here:

“Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?”
Psalms 88:12, KJV

The writer of Ecclesiastes also tells us:

“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”
Ecclesiastes 9:10, KJV

If there is no knowledge or wisdom in the grave, it can only be because there is no conscious thought.

While this is the fate of our physical bodies following death, what about our spirits? For the saved Christian, the scenario is very different. As the Apostle Paul tells us:

“We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”
2 Corinthians 5:8, KJV

“But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.”
Philippians 1:22-24, KJV

Hawaii Senate Approves Civil Unions

As you may have already heard, this past Wednesday, by a vote of 18 to 5, the Hawaii Senate approved civil unions. Neil Abercrombie, the Democratic governor of Hawaii, is expected to sign the bill within ten business days, and the law will go into effect on January 1, 2012.

Just prior to that vote, the Hawaii Senate also confirmed Hawaii’s first openly-gay Supreme Court justice, Sabrina McKenna.

As I have been saying for a long time now, since series such as “Homosexuality And Lesbianism: To The Point!” and “When Sin Is No Longer A Sin”, through their own rebellion against God, secular, liberal lawmakers are slowly but surely replacing God’s holy, eternal Laws with man’s imperfect laws, which quite often — as in this case — outright contradict and attempt to nullify God’s Laws. This latest development in the state of Hawaii is more proof of that.

But by which set of Laws will we all eventually be judged? That is what we all need to look at, because those are the only Laws that matter. Only foolish and rebellious men would try to dictate to God what laws we must obey and follow. Consider these verses:

“So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”
Romans 14:12, KJV

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”
2 Corinthians 5:10, KJV
