BACKBITETH - To slander; to falsely accuse.

A Psalm of David. LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that BACKBITETH not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.  Psalm 15:1-3, KJV

BACKBITINGS - Evil speakings; slanders.

For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, BACKBITINGS, whisperings, swellings, tumults.  2 Corinthians 12:20, KJV

BAKEMEATS - The works of a baker.

When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head: and in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of BAKEMEATS for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.  Genesis 40:16-17, KJV

BALM - A medicine; gum/rosin from a bush.

For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates. Go up into Gilead, and take BALM, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt not be cured.  Jeremiah 46:10-11, KJV

BANQUETING - A drinking bout.

For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, BANQUETINGS, and abominable idolatries: wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you.  1 Peter 4:3-4, KJV

BAPTIZE - To immerse; to dip or dye a thing.

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be BAPTIZED every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.  Acts 2:38-40, KJV

BARBARIAN - A non-Greek.

And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. And when the BARBARIANS saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.  Acts 28:3-4, KJV

BASE - Lowly; meek.

Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am BASE among you, but being absent am bold toward you.  2 Corinthians 10:1, KJV

BATH - A liquid measurement.

Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one BATH, and the seed of an homer shall yield an ephah.  Isaiah 5:10, KJV

BATTLEMENT - Retaining wall.

When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a BATTLEMENT for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence.  Deuteronomy 22:8, KJV

BAY - A reddish-brown color.

And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and BAY horses.  Zechariah 3:3, KJV

BECAME - Was exactly suited for; was fitting.

But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest BECAME us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens.  Hebrews 7:24-26, KJV

BEDSTEAD - An elaborate and rich couch or bed.

For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his BEDSTEAD was a BEDSTEAD of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.  Deuteronomy 3:11, KJV

BEEVES - Horned cattle fit to plough.

Ye shall offer at your own will a male without blemish, of the BEEVES, of the sheep, or of the goats.  Leviticus 22:19, KJV

BEGAT - To bear; to bring forth.

The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham BEGAT Isaac; and Isaac BEGAT Jacob; and Jacob BEGAT Judas and his brethren;  Matthew 1:1-2, KJV

BEGOTTEN - To have born; brought forth.

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is BEGOTTEN of him.  1 John 5:1, KJV

BEGUILE - To deceive; lead astray.

And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent BEGUILED me, and I did eat.  Genesis 3:12-13, KJV

BEHEMOTH - A huge, strong animal.

Behold now BEHEMOTH, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.  Job 40:15-16, KJV

BEHOVE - To be necessary; needful.

Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it BEHOVED Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.  Luke 24:45-47, KJV

BELIED - To lie against; to speak falsely.

For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD. They have BELIED the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine.  Jeremiah 5:11-12, KJV

BERYL - A precious stone.

Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: his body also was like the BERYL, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.  Daniel 10:5-6, KJV

BESEECH - To call upon; appeal; beg.

I BESEECH you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  Romans 12:1, KJV

BESOM - A broom or sweep.

For I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the LORD. I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water: and I will sweep it with the BESOM of destruction, saith the LORD of hosts.  Isaiah 14:22-23, KJV

BESOUGHT - Entreated; asked; called.

For this thing I BESOUGHT the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  2 Corinthians 12:8-9, KJV

BESTEAD - Hard pressed; oppressed.

And they shall pass through it, hardly BESTEAD and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.  Isaiah 8:21, KJV

BESTOW - To gather together.

And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to BESTOW my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I BESTOW all my fruits and my goods.  Luke 12:16-18, KJV

BETHINK - "Lay it to heart"; consider and repent.

If they sin against thee, (for there is no man which sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them over before their enemies, and they carry them away captives unto a land far off or near; yet if they BETHINK themselves in the land whither they are carried captive, and turn and pray unto thee in the land of their captivity, saying, We have sinned, we have done amiss, and have dealt wickedly...then hear thou from the heavens, even from thy dwelling place, their prayer and their supplications, and maintain their cause, and forgive thy people which have sinned against thee.  2 Chronicles 6:36-39, KJV

BETIMES - Early; quickly.

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him BETIMES.  Proverbs 13:24, KJV

BETROTHED - To be engaged.

And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely. And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will BETROTH thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies.  Hosea 2:18-19, KJV

BETWIXT - Between; in an intermediate position.

A bundle of myrrh is my wellbeloved unto me; he shall lie all night BETWIXT my breasts.  Song of Solomon 1:13, KJV

BEWITCHED - To fascinate; to mislead with words.

O foolish Galatians, who hath BEWITCHED you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?  Galatians 3:1, KJV

BEWRAY - To make manifest, clear, evident.

And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech BEWRAYETH thee. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.  Matthew 26:72-74, KJV

BIER - Device on which dead bodies were placed.

And he came and touched the BIER: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.  Luke 7:14-15, KJV

BILLOW - A swelling or heap of water.

Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy BILLOWS are gone over me.  Psalm 42:7, KJV

BISHOP - An overseer.

This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a BISHOP, he desireth a good work. A BISHOP then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach.  1 Timothy 3:1, KJV

BISHOPRIC - Guardianship; office of overseeing.

Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his BISHOPRIC let another take.  Acts 1:18-20, KJV

BLAINS - Inflamed skin tumors.

And the LORD said unto Moses and unto Aaron, Take to you handfuls of ashes of the furnace, and let Moses sprinkle it toward the heaven in the sight of Pharaoh. And it shall become small dust in all the land of Egypt, and shall be a boil breaking forth with BLAINS upon man, and upon beast, throughout all the land of Egypt.  Exodus 9:8-9, KJV

BLESSED - Happy.

BLESSED is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.  Psalm 1:1-2, KJV

BOISTEROUS - Strong; mighty; powerful.

And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind BOISTEROUS, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.  Matthew 14:29-30, KJV

BOLLED - Blossomed; in the seed/pod.

And the flax and the barley was smitten: for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was BOLLED. But the wheat and the rie were not smitten: for they were not grown up.  Exodus 9:31-32, KJV

BOLSTER - Head-rest; pillow.

And when the messengers were come in, behold, there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goats' hair for his BOLSTER.  1 Samuel 26:12, KJV

BOSSES - Circular swelling, mid-part of a shield.

The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor. Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty. He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick BOSSES of his bucklers: because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.  Job 15:27, KJV

BOTCH - An ulcer.

The LORD will smite thee with the BOTCH of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed.  Deuteronomy 28:27, KJV

BOUND - Landmark.

The princes of Judah were like them that remove the BOUND: therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.  Hosea 5:10, KJV

BOWELS - Inward parts; affections.

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, BOWELS of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering.  Colossians 3:12, KJV

BRAVERY - Beauty; splendor.

In that day the Lord will take away the BRAVERY of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon, the chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers, the bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings.  Isaiah 3:18-20, KJV

BRAWLER - One who is inclined to fight.

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a BRAWLER, not covetous.  1 Timothy 3:2-3, KJV

BRAY - To crush as in a mortar.

Though thou shouldest BRAY a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.  Proverbs 27:22, KJV

BRAYED - To groan, wail; make a foul noise.

Among the bushes they BRAYED; under the nettles they were gathered together. They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.  Job 30:7, KJV

BREACHES - Bays; harbors; creeks.

Gilead abode beyond Jordan: and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea shore, and abode in his BREACHES.  Judges 5:17, KJV

BREECHES - Trousers.

They shall have linen bonnets upon their heads, and shall have linen BREECHES upon their loins; they shall not gird themselves with any thing that causeth sweat.  Ezekiel 44:18, KJV

BRIGANDINE - A coat of armor.

Order ye the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle. Harness the horses; and get up, ye horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, and put on the BRIGANDINES.  Jeremiah 46:3-4, KJV

BRIMSTONE - Sulphur.

The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and BRIMSTONE, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.  Psalm 11:6, KJV

BROIDED - Twined; braided.

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with BROIDED hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.  1 Timothy 2:9, KJV

BROOD - A group of young animals.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her BROOD under her wings, and ye would not!  Luke 13:34, KJV

BRUIT - News; a rumor; a report.

Behold, the noise of the BRUIT is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.  Jeremiah 10:22, KJV

BRUTISH - Stupid.

Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is BRUTISH.  Proverbs 12:1, KJV

BUCKLER - A shield.

The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my BUCKLER, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.  Psalm 18:2-3, KJV

BUFFET - To strike with a clenched fist.

What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death. Then did they spit in his face, and BUFFETED him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands, saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?  Matthew 26:66-68, KJV

BULLOCK - Bull; steer; ox.

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or BULLOCK that hath horns and hoofs.  Psalm 69:30-31, KJV

BULWARK - A defensive structure.

Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof. Mark ye well her BULWARKS, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.  Psalm 48:12-13, KJV

BUTTOCKS - The seat; the posteriors; the rear end.

And the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia; so shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians prisoners, and the Ethiopians captives, young and old, naked and barefoot, even with their BUTTOCKS uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.  Isaiah 20:3-4, KJV

BY AND BY - At once; immediately.

And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me BY AND BY in a charger the head of John the Baptist.  Mark 6:24-25, KJV
