ABASE - To make or bring low; to humble.

For whosoever exalteth himself shall be ABASED; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.  Luke 14:11, KJV

ABATE - To diminish; lessen.

And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were ABATED. And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.  Genesis 8:3-4, KJV

ABBA - Aramaic/Hebrew for "father".

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, ABBA, Father.  Romans 8:15, KJV

ABHOR - Despise; spurn; regard with horror.

Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they spake against me. All my inward friends ABHORRED me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.  Job 19:18-19, KJV

ABJECTS - Those who strike out with their tongue.

But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: yea, the ABJECTS gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not: With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.  Psalm 35:15-16, KJV

ACQUIT - To hold guiltless.

The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all ACQUIT the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.  Nahum 1:3, KJV

ADAMANT - An extremely hard substance.

But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee; for they will not hearken unto me: for all the house of Israel are impudent and hardhearted. Behold, I have made thy face strong against their faces, and thy forehead strong against their foreheads. As an ADAMANT harder than flint have I made thy forehead: fear them not, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.  Ezekiel 3:7-9, KJV

ADDER - A venomous snake.

The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf ADDER that stoppeth her ear; which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.  Psalm 58:3-5, KJV

ADJURE - To appeal to earnestly; to command.

But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I ADJURE thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.  Matthew 26:63, KJV

ADMONISH - To instruct; advise; warn.

Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul ADMONISHED them, And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.  Acts 27:9-10, KJV

ADMONITION - Instruction.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and ADMONITION of the Lord.  Ephesians 6:1-4, KJV

ADO - Fuss; bother; tumult.

And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ADO, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.  Mark 5:38-39, KJV

ADVERTISE - Inform; counsel.

And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will ADVERTISE thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.  Numbers 24:14, KJV

AFFINITY - A marriage alliance.

And Solomon made AFFINITY with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the LORD, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.  1 Kings 3:1, KJV

AFOOT - By feet; performed by foot.

And we went before to ship, and sailed unto Assos, there intending to take in Paul: for so had he appointed, minding himself to go AFOOT. And when he met with us at Assos, we took him in, and came to Mitylene.  Acts 20:13-14, KJV

AFORE - Before.

For AFORE the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks, and take away and cut down the branches.  Isaiah 18:5, KJV

AFORETIME - At a former time; previously.

For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down AFORETIME into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.  Isaiah 52:4, KJV

AFRESH - Again; anew.

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God AFRESH, and put him to an open shame.  Hebrews 6:4-6, KJV

AGAR - Another name for Hagar, Sarah's maid.

Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is AGAR.  Galatians 4:21-24, KJV

AGONE - Gone by; past; ago.

And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days AGONE I fell sick.  1 Samuel 30:13, KJV

AGUE - A fever.

I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning AGUE, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.  Leviticus 26:16, KJV

ALBEIT - Even though; although.

Have ye not seen a vain vision, and have ye not spoken a lying divination, whereas ye say, The LORD saith it; ALBEIT I have not spoken? Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord GOD.  Ezekiel 13:7, KJV

ALLELUIA - Praise ye the LORD!

And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, ALLELUIA; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and  Revelation 19:1, KJV

ALMS - Acts and deeds of mercy.

But when thou doest ALMS, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: that thine ALMS may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.  Matthew 6:3-4, KJV

ALOOF - At a distance, but within view.

Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me. My lovers and my friends stand ALOOF from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.  Psalm 38:9-11, KJV

AMBASSAGE - A group of aged, high ranking men.

Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an AMBASSAGE, and desireth conditions of peace.  Luke 14:31-32, KJV

AMEN - Dependable; faithful; certain.

And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the AMEN, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.  Revelation 3:14-15, KJV

AMERCE - To punish by fine.

And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him; and they shall AMERCE him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.  Deuteronomy 22:18-19, KJV

AMIABLE - Dear; lovely; beloved.

To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm for the sons of Korah. How AMIABLE are thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts! My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.  Psalm 84:1-2, KJV

ANATHEMA - An accursed thing.

If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be ANATHEMA Maranatha.  1 Corinthians 16:22, KJV

ANGEL - Messenger.

The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the ANGELS of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.  Revelation 1:20, KJV

ANGLE - A fish hook.

The fishers also shall mourn, and all they that cast ANGLE into the brooks shall lament, and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish.  Isaiah 19:8, KJV

ANOINT - To rub in; rub on.

Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and ANOINT thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.  Revelation 3:17-18, KJV

ANON - Immediately.

But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and ANON with joy receiveth it; yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.  Matthew 13:20, KJV

ANTICHRIST - One opposed to Christ.

Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that ANTICHRIST shall come, even now are there many ANTICHRISTS; whereby we know that it is the last time.  1 John 2:18, KJV

APACE - At a quick pace; quickly.

Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? And their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled APACE, and look not back: for fear was round about, saith the LORD. Let not the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they shall stumble, and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates.  Jeremiah 46:5-6, KJV

APOSTLE - Messenger; one who has been sent.

But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the APOSTLES of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.  Jude 1:17-18, KJV

APOTHECARY - One who makes perfumes.

And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the APOTHECARY: it shall be an holy anointing oil.  Exodus 30:25, KJV

APPLE - The pupil of the eye.

Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon. For thus saith the LORD of hosts; after the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the APPLE of his eye.  Zechariah 2:7-8, KJV

ARCHANGEL - Chief angel.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the ARCHANGEL, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.  1 Thessalonians 4:16, KJV

ARCTURUS - A bright star.

[God] which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea. Which maketh ARCTURUS, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.  Job 9:8-9, KJV

ARK - Box; chest.

And they shall make an ARK of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.  Exodus 25:10, KJV

ARMHOLES - Armpits.

So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah. And Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine ARMHOLES under the cords. And Jeremiah did so. So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.  Jeremiah 38:11-13, KJV

ARRAY - To put on; to clothe.

Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: and yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not ARRAYED like one of these.  Matthew 6:27-29, KJV

ART - "Are"; second person singular.

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which ART in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earthh, as it is in heaven.  Matthew 6:9, KJV

ASP - A snake, serpent.

And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the ASP, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.  Isaiah 11:8-9, KJV

ASSAY - To attempt; to undertake.

Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, After they were come to Mysia, they ASSAYED to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.  Acts 16:6-7, KJV

ASSENT - To agree upon.

For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law. But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands, Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him. And the Jews also ASSENTED, saying that these things were so.  Acts 24:5-9, KJV

ASSWAGE - To settle down; subside; hold back.

And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters ASSWAGED; the fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;  Genesis 8:1-2, KJV

ASTONIED - To be taken by surprise.

Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high. As many were ASTONIED at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men.  Isaiah 52:13-14, KJV

ASUNDER - Apart from one another.

And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put ASUNDER.  Matthew 19:4-6, KJV

ATONEMENT - A covering (for sin).

And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an ATONEMENT for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not, and it shall be forgiven him.  Leviticus 5:18, KJV

AUSTERE - Harsh; severe; exacting.

And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: For I feared thee, because thou art an AUSTERE man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow. And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an AUSTERE man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow: Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?  Luke 19:20-23, KJV

AVERSE - To turn away from.

Even of late my people is risen up as an enemy: ye pull off the robe with the garment from them that pass by securely as men AVERSE from war. The women of my people have ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever.  Micah 2:8-9, KJV

AVOUCH - To acknowledge of one's own.

Thou hast AVOUCHED the LORD this day to be thy God, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to hearken unto his voice: and the LORD hath AVOUCHED thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments.  Deuteronomy 26:17-18, KJV

AXLETREE - Spindle of a wheel.

And under the borders were four wheels; and the AXLETREES of the wheels were joined to the base: and the height of a wheel was a cubit and half a cubit.  1 Kings 7:32, KJV
