A discussion regarding adaptation -- also known as micro-evolution -- evolution -- also known as macro-evolution -- and the Six Days of Creation as found in the Book of Genesis
As anyone who has undertaken an in-depth study of my writings will know, I wholeheartedly refute the Darwinian theory of evolution -- or what I prefer to call EVILution -- that is to say, the blasphemous hypothesis which states that, contrary to the Biblical account found in Genesis, we human beings have slowly evolved over millions of years from monkeys, and other lower lifeforms. I find the whole idea absurd, and an affront to our human intelligence. This theory is in direct contradiction to what we find in the account of Creation, where we read the following:
"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
Genesis 2:7, KJV
However, when I was a malleable young boy a good many years ago, my thoughts and beliefs were not so firmly established as they are today. I must admit that I was a bit confused by some matters such as the sharp disagreement between science and religion. As a young Christian I could never quite understand the link between Biblical teachings and the EVILutionary model espoused by scientists and teachers alike. That elusive connection just seemed to evade me. Many scientists claimed that such an unbroken chain of events existed in the EVILutionary line between apes and the first homo erectus, but they never seemed to be able to produce concrete evidence to prove it. Of course, now that I have grown up and have spent a considerable number of years studying the Bible, I know that there isn't any such link. It was, and is, nothing more than a fabrication created by those desperate for evidence to support the flimsy theories and vain imaginations of rebellious men. EVILution is all just a Big Lie cooked up by those who seek to discredit the Bible and call God a liar. Being as they refuse to acknowledge the wonderful handiwork of the One True God, they have had to rely upon their own carnal wisdom to create gods which be no gods:
[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.] The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork."
Psalms 19:1, KJV
"Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:"
Acts 19:26, KJV
If you think that we don't have the same thing going on today two thousand years later, just look in any museum at all of those fake skeletons, mannequins and plaster of Paris molds of dinosaurs and cavemen. Maybe they are not gods of Greece, or gods of Rome, but they are the gods of modern atheistic science. They are the result of man becoming lifted up in his own pride and wisdom. As the Apostle Paul informs us:
At any rate, I was your typical bespectacled young kid who was deeply involved in reading a lot of books, particularly those which dealt with mystery -- such as the Hardy Boys -- and all types of science. I also owned a small battery-operated microscope, a spotting scope, a mineral collection, a seashell collection, a collection of cards which contained photographs of and information on different wild birds, and other such things which young boys my age cherished. I was also into playing with dinosaurs, and I often wondered about cavemen. I was your typical nature freak and greatly enjoyed exploring the woods and streams of the surrounding area where I lived. Observing wildlife really excited me. Sometimes I would roam for hours just looking for something new to discover, overturning rocks hoping to find a new kind of snake, looking in streams for crayfish and salamanders, etc. Unlike where I currently live, we had all kinds of interesting animals to see such as groundhogs, rabbits, bats, raccoons, snakes, possums and such. There were also a multitude of birds including robins, sparrows, cardinals, bluejays, a variety of woodpeckers, hummingbirds, chickadees, wild canaries, hawks, starlings, wrens, pheasants and the like. I simply connected with nature while other young boys my age were more into playing with marbles, toy soldiers and baseball cards, or else going to school sporting events, etc. In a way, I think I already knew then that I was different from most other kids. I was just a shy little boy lost in his own little world of scientific wonder and mystery. Looking back at it now, I am sure it must have been the Lord revealing His Power and Might to me through the wonders of His Creation, for as we are told by Paul in his epistle to the Romans:
"For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:"
Romans 1:20, KJV
Of course, the problem with this, as explained above, is that some folks have taken their study of nature and science to the extreme and in essence now worship it more than they do God Himself who created it all for His and our own enjoyment:
"Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things . . . Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen."
Romans 1:21-23, 25, KJV
As a matter of fact, this same thing has happened throughout the history of humankind. In ancient Israel, the practice of worshipping nature or the creation became so bad that the prophet Jeremiah had to warn them against such things when he said:
"Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us."
Jeremiah 2:27, KJV
One other thing I greatly enjoyed as a boy was going fishing with my dad, brothers, and sometimes a cousin. We'd go down to the Ohio River to catch carp, catfish, perch and bluegill. That's about all there were in the polluted waters of the Ohio. Even in those days, the oil sludge ruined the shore in quite a few places where we went. You could smell the stench of the oil all around you and see it on the rocks. I can only imagine what it must be like now three decades later. But I was quite ignorant on the issues of environmental pollution in those days. We'd just catch our fish for sport and then throw them back in again. Apart from our home always being full of the aroma of "doughball" in preparation for the next fishing trip, we also had quite a variety of pets throughout the years. Some of these were store-bought, while others were caught from the wild. These included such things as injured baby birds like robins, sparrows, wrens and starlings, reptiles such as wild snakes, iguanas, chameleons, a cayman, a rainbow lizard and a basilisk, wild mice and store-bought mice and white rats, Eastern Painted turtles, dogs, a rabbit, scores of guinea pigs, an assortment of insects and stream life, and Lord knows what else. In short, our home was a constant zoo, and I loved it. When I became a little older, I was allowed to have my first aquarium. I can't even remember what size it was, but it was probably about five gallons. Eventually, before I finally left home at the age of seventeen, I was the proud owner of a twenty gallon aquarium containing several pairs of angelfish. In those days, that was considered to be a rather large tank. I think I helped purchase it with money from my paper route. Since then, I have set up aquariums as large as three hundred gallons, and marine aquariums at that!
Well, time drifted on by, and I grew up and became involved in a lot of other things; but I never lost my love for aquariums. Eventually, many years later, I came to form my own small aquarium maintenance business; and that is where we come to one of the topics of this current discussion. While I continue to remain diametrically opposed to the theory of EVILution as a whole, that is, the ape-to-man and millions-of-years scenario, within the recent past I was quite startled to discover that there is evidence around us today which is suggestive of scientific proof for the process of adaptation. I am not necessarily referring to full-blown EVILution, but perhaps to what some might equate to a partial form of EVILution which allows certain organisms to adapt to their living environment. Allow me to explain:
A number of years ago, I was searching for some local freshwater plants to place in several freshwater aquariums I own. I had been told that I might find some down at a nearby swamp area. To my delight, I did find the plants, but I also received quite a surprise in the process. Being as I am a Bible-believingChristian, for many years I have been a staunch supporter of the belief that all living organisms continue to exist in their original state since the day the Lord created them some six thousand years ago. Well folks, while gathering plants that day, I was truly shocked to discover that a certain water plant actually does adapt to its environment. The name of this plant is either Wisteria or Watersprite. These plants appear to be quite similar in appearance, so I am not sure which one it actually is. Whether this plant is in the wild, or in a home aquarium, it behaves in the same manner. In fact, what I discovered is that it is quite hardy and will easily and quickly grow from any size of cutting, even without roots attached.
But here is what shocked me the most. While this plant can take root and grow in damp ground near the shore, it also thrives quite well underwater. I have not really taken the time to find out which is its native habitat. At any rate, underwater, Wisteria -- or Watersprite -- forms broad pointed leaves with a light greenish-yellow color. On land however, the leaves are much smaller, somewhat curled up and a dark green. You can find both types of leaves growing on the very same plant; and this is what shocked me. At this point, since I am not a botanist, I can only theorize that due to the direct sunlight to which the plant is exposed out of water, not as much surface area is required to produce the needed chlorophyll. Thus, the leaves are considerably smaller. The fact that they are curled up is something I cannot account for. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the air is a drier environment. I must state though that the leaves are not dried out by any means. They are simply darker in color, smaller and curled up. On the other hand, being as the water is darker in color due to the peat which it contains, the sunlight is greatly filtered out, thus producing the need for the plant to grow larger broader leaves to capture what sunlight does penetrate the surface of the pond. Despite their increased size, the leaves are still much lighter in color and cannot produce the same amount of chlorophyll as those leaves which are outside of the water.
Now whether you wish to refer to this example as genetic mutation, adaptation, or EVILution, is up to you. I prefer to look at it as merely a form of adaptation. I don't believe that the plant has evolved over thousands or millions of years; I believe it is in the same state that it was in since the day the Lord created it. As we are told in Genesis, all plants were created with their own seed in them to produce ONLY their own kind. You are not going to get an apple from an orange tree. It is only in this modern day of genetic engineering that man is forcing things to reproduce contrary to God's natural plan. Consider what we read in the account of Creation:
"And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good."
Genesis 1:11-12, KJV
I believe that this Wisteria -- or Watersprite -- plant has probably possessed this ability to survive on land and under water since the day of its creation. The Lord simply gave it the ability to adapt to a local situation. Looking at it in reverse, it would be similar to a person putting on sunscreen while taking an outing to the beach, or possibly sitting under a large umbrella so as not to get sunburned. No matter how many times that person puts on sunscreen or sits under the umbrella, he isn't going to evolve to where they became a part of him. They are just things that a person does to protect himself from the sun. In like manner, the water plant does the same thing to absorb more sunlight for photosynthetic purposes. That may not be the brightest example in the world, but I think it gets my point across. Anyway, for me personally, it was quite a revelation to even discover the amazing abilities of the Wisteria. I think that sometimes we as Christians become so involved in our religion, that we tend to become blinded and put God in a box so-to-speak. Who are we to limit the Lord as to what He can or cannot do, or when He can or cannot do it? Again, I am not saying I believe in EVILution per se as taught by the atheistic EVILutionists; I most definitely do not, but there definitely is some degree of adaptation as I have pointed out through this account. For me to admit this is quite a change in my personal stance on this issue.
In discussion EVILution with a small group of associates, one certain Christian fellow was attempting to find some common ground between EVILution and Creationism. In his argument, he said in part:
----- Begin Quote -----
"I used to teach biology in H.S. and personally had no problem co-teaching the concepts of Creation and EVILution side by side. EVILution is often misunderstood and therefore mistaught. EVILution is a THEORY, and nothing more. There is evidence pointing towards the type of adaptive/developmental changes which you suggested as examples of 'EVILution.' The problem comes when we deal with the creation of humankind. Here is one possibility that I developed and shared with those who were adamant believers: God has full control of the material world and can do what He wants. The fossil record indicates that a hominid line existed and developed attributes which allowed it to cope with its changing world. There is nothing to say that God didn't create this lowly hominid (much as He created all living things) and then, through His grace, guided and directed the development of this hominid, much as a potter guides and directs the shape of clay on his spinning wheel, until the subject of God's will had reached the level of God's wishes. That point would have been when the physical aspect of the Creation would have been able to withstand the Spiritual portion of God's creation, the Immortal soul. At the time when God breathed the life of awareness of Him, that is to imbue the material body with the Spiritual attributes of the Soul, then would the CREATION of the Spiritual/Material being we know as MAN have come into being. This spiritual CREATION could only have taken place at the behest of God. We could consider it a Progressive Revelation of God's will. At first we only have the lump of clay, unrecognizable and with little future in hands other than those of the Master Potter. With time and His infinite patience the shape of the vessel was formed, the decorations place, the color applied, but not until the clay feels the heat of the Creator's will does it become capable of holding the indestructible soul."
----- End Of Quote -----
While I found this person's comments interesting regarding the possibilities of a hominid line leading up to the creation of Adam, I consider them fundamentally flawed, particularly if he is inferring by his phrase "With time and His infinite patience" that the Six Days of Genesis were not actually six literal days as we know them today. I strongly feel that anyone who is trying to find common ground between the theory of EVILution and Creationism is compromising their faith. They are bowing under Satan's pressure through the mouths and opinions of their peers. They are trying to hide their light under a bushel in order to pacify their critics and be accepted which is not what Jesus told us to do, as we see by these verses:
"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
Matthew 5:14-16, KJV
If we are not willing to accept persecution from family, friends and strangers because of our Christian beliefs, then we are not very strong soldiers for the Lord. It may interest some of you to know that it was my very choice to serve the Lord fulltime and preach the Truth of the Gospel which caused me to become alienated from my family many years ago. When I began telling my patriotic father what I thought of the U.S. Government, he didn't take to it too kindly. When I started pointing out the hypocrisy of organized religion, my Catholic family wasn't very happy about it. It got to the point where my dad told me once in a letter that how he believed was his business. While this is indeed true, it just goes to show what happens when you preach the full counsel of God and not just a simple salvation message. What happened to me was in direct fulfillment of Jesus' own words when He said:
"And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me."
Matthew 10:36-38, KJV
If we are not receiving at least some degree of verbal or physical persecution from some corner, then we should really examine ourselves to see whether we are preaching a watered down, socially-acceptable gospel", or the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. In his letter to Timothy, Paul said:
"Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution."
2 Timothy 3:12, KJV
As I have pointed out in other articles, Jesus and almost every single one of His original disciples suffered martyrs' deaths. It was only when the Early Church began to cool off and compromise with the established Roman system a few hundred years later that the persecution began to die down. In fact, those who were once the persecuted soon became the persecutors as the Catholic Inquisition so vividly illustrates. The main point is, if you are just preaching a watered-down gospel and not the Real One, maybe you need to get with it so the Lord isn't disappointed with you at His coming:
"Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."
Mark 8:38, KJV
When Jesus spoke the Word, it divided people. It separated the sheep from the goats. It had a definite effect which no one could deny. It separated the believers from the non-believers, and it should be doing the very same thing today. If it isn't, then something is terribly wrong somewhere, and it is probably in the message bearer. Consider these verses:
"Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:"
Luke 12:51, KJV
"So there was a division among the people because of him."
John 7:43, KJV
"Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them."
John 9:16, KJV
"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword."
Matthew 10:34, KJV
"If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple."
Luke 14:26, KJV
"Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another."
Matthew 24:9-10, KJV
"Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved."
Mark 13:12-13, KJV
This is what happens when you preach the True Gospel of Jesus Christ. It divided people, even families. Either they accept the Truth, or else they reject it. It is for this reason that the Word of God is described as a piercing sword:
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
Hebrews 4:12, KJV
Sadly this is exactly what we see happening in many churches today. They are preaching a watered-down Gospel which doesn't convict the hearts of anyone. It doesn't move anyone in the Spirit. It doesn't tell anyone that they are living selfishly, that they need to stop spending most of their time living for themselves, and start doing more for the Lord. In many cases what you have are false shepherds who have lulled their flocks to sleep with their dead sermons; that is, if they even preach a sermon at all. And actually, that is all they amount to, meaningless sermons, because many of them don't even live by what they preach. As long as they have their nice salary and their nice place to live, and their nice car, and are held in high regard by their church members and citizens of the community, they will tell them exactly what they want to hear. They will be part of the crowd which claims peace and safety when sudden destruction comes upon them. Some of those churches have become infiltrated by secular humanist preachers who are nothing but wolves in sheep's clothing. Others are hirelings who have only entered into the fold to spiritually destroy the faith of their members by teaching false doctrines and the wisdom of man such as EVILution. Even the Catholic Church recently took a step in this direction. As Jesus said:
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep."
John 10:1-13, KJV
The Prophet Ezekiel really blasted the false shepherds of Israel when he said:
"Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD; As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock; Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them."
Ezekiel 34:7-10, KJV
Well, there I go again getting tripped off on another tangent . . . but then some of you folks know how that goes. I just start typing and never know where things are going to end up. I just try to go with the flow of the Spirit. Sometimes I need to force myself to stop and get back on track; otherwise, these articles would be much longer than some of them already are. In a way though, this is all related because many of these false shepherds of the faith have slowly and subtly introduced EVILution and humanism into their sermons. They have totally de-spiritualized the true Message of the Gospels. But getting back to our main topic, in thinking about the above person's comment, I am again reminded of a verse from Peter's second epistle which states:
"But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."
2 Peter 3:8, KJV
Over the years, I have heard a variety of interpretations applied to this verse. Some people -- such as myself -- use this verse to support the idea that, based on the Biblical records, the Earth is really only around six thousand years old, give or take a few hundred years. In my article "The Earth Is Under 7,000 Years Old!" I show Scripture by Scripture how this age is obtained without using very many external sources. This figure seems to be supported by archeological records which only date back to Egypt as far as I know . . . at least they used to. Now we have false prophets like Zecharia Sitchin claiming that the Sumerian clay tablets are much older than the Biblical record. He and other New Age false prophets paint a very different picture than what we find in Genesis. While there may be some truth mixed in, as Satan invariably does, a lot of this New Age psychobabble is just the erroneous assumptions of deluded men who have rejected the Truth of God's Word.
