No Man Is An Island, Scriptural Basis, Saved By Grace Alone,
Bought With A Price, Dead In Sins, Daily Sacrificial Service

Recently, while involved in a discussion with a certain
person who participates in my electronic mail ministry, the
conversation turned to the topics of the Crucifixion of
Christ, and His Blood Atonement which has resulted in our
Salvation through faith in His Name. This person made the
comment that we are in some way placed on, or added to, the
Cross with Christ; that the Blood of Jesus is then added to
our own blood; and then we are dead and resurrected with
Him. Even after I had offered this person a few Scriptural
answers in order to clear up what seemed to me to be a bit
of confusion on his part concerning what it means to be
crucified with Christ, I still felt a certain uneasiness in
my heart concerning the things he had been saying. As the
Apostle Paul states in so many words in his discourse found
in the fourteenth chapter of his Epistle to the Romans,
concerning the eating of meat, no man is an island. In other
words, we each affect each other by the words we speak, and
by the thoughts which we convey:

"For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.
(Romans 14:7)

Because of this Scriptural truth, I felt it was important to
offer a clearer more amplified Scriptural explanation of
exactly what it means to be crucified with Christ. This
thought finds its origin in such verses as the following
taken from the writings of Paul:

"Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that
the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we
should not serve sin." (Romans 6:6)

"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I,
but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in
the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved
me, and gave himself for me." (Galatians 2:20)

"But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of
our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto
me, and I unto the world." (Galatians 6:14)

If there is one thing of which I am absolutely certain, it
is that as far as our Salvation is concerned, we do not need
to be hung on any cross in any way, whether it be physically,
spiritually or symbolically speaking; because Christ has
already done that for us. The Scriptures make this perfectly
clear. Consider the following:

"Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the
tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto
righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed."
(1 Peter 2:24)

In a subtle way, to suggest that we must be placed on the
Cross with Christ, is like saying that His Sacrifice alone
was not enough. It is to suggest that His Atonement was not
sufficient price to redeem us from our sins; as if we need
to share in His sufferings in order to merit Salvation. It
is as if one is saying, 'Move over Jesus, and let me help
you save me'. In other words, through this mentality, one is
replacing Salvation based upon complete Grace and Faith,
with one based upon one's own 'good' works. Of course, as I
point out in many of my articles on the topic of Salvation,
this idea totally goes against the Scriptures. Consider the
following verses:

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of
yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any
man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)

"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but
according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of
regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;"
(Titus 3:5)

"Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be
justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of
sin." (Romans 3:20)

"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the
law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed
in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of
Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of
the law shall no flesh be justified." (Galatians 2:16)

"And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise
grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no
more grace: otherwise work is no more work."
(Romans 11:6)

I am reminded of a helpful little acronym I have shared with
my readers a number of times before. It goes like this:

G = Gift
R = Received
A = At
C = Christ's
E = Expense

That is precisely what it means to be saved by Grace. It is
to accept the Gift which Godly freely offers through the
Sacrifice of His Son. Jesus Christ alone bore our sins on
the Cross. He did what we cannot do for ourselves. He was
the Perfect Sacrifice because He met the full requirements
of the Law being as He is a Lamb without spot or blemish. He
has paid the price in full for our sins. It is for this
reason that the Apostles Peter and Paul wrote such things as
the following:

"Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men."
(1 Corinthians 7:23)

"Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with
corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain
conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But
with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without
blemish and without spot:" (1 Peter 1:18-19)

Nothing we do can ever save us, or make us worthy of Eternal
Life, short of accepting the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ. We
cannot participate in His Sacrifice on the Cross in any way,
because the Scriptures clearly tell us that we are dead in
our sins. We are unfit to be any form of atonement. Consider
the following verses found in Paul's Epistles:

"And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and
sins;...Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us
together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)"
(Ephesians 2:1, 5)

"And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of
your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having
forgiven you all trespasses;" (Colossians 2:13)

If this is the case, and it most certainly is, based upon
the Scriptures, what does it really mean to be crucified
with Christ? The answer is really quite simple. The Apostle
Paul provides us with a clear answer in several other verses
found in his first Epistle to the Corinthians, where he also
mentions that we are bought with a price. Notice what he

"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy
Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not
your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify
God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."
(1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

What does Paul mean by glorifying God in one's body? Again,
if we follow the safe practice of comparing Scripture with
Scripture, we find an immediate answer to this question. To
glorify God in our body, is to sacrifice, or to deny, our
own personal interests, wants and needs in this life, as
well as our time, and to give our lives to the Lord in
loving voluntary Christian service to others every single
day of our lives. Our cross is a daily experience in which
we surrender our lives, and our wills, in order that we
might shine forth His Light, and bear lasting fruit for the
Kingdom of God. This idea is fully substantiated by the
following verses:

"And he said to them all, If any man will come after me,
let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and
follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it:
but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same
shall save it." (Luke 9:23-24)

"I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ
Jesus our Lord, I die daily."
(1 Corinthians 15:31)

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of
God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice,
holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable
service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye
transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may
prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect,
will of God." (Romans 12:1-2)

"Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down
his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the
brethren." (1 John 3:16)

Notice that both the Lord and the Apostle Paul specifically
tell us that this denying of ourselves, this placing
ourselves on the symbolic cross, is actually a daily living
sacrifice. This is not a 'go to church on Sunday only', or a
'I'll do it when I feel like it' routine. That is not real
Christianity. As I explain in other articles such as 'Where
Are The First Century Churches?', those people who are
really serious about serving the Lord, do it on a daily
basis. If you doubt this, consider the following verses
taken straight from the New Testament plan found in the Book
of Acts:

"And so were the churches established in the faith, and
increased in number daily." (Acts 16:5)

"These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that
they received the word with all readiness of mind, and
searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were
so." (Acts 17:11)

Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the
Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily
with them that met with him." (Acts 17:17)

"But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake
evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from
them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the
school of one Tyrannus." (Acts 19:9)

Thus we see, by comparing Scripture with Scripture, what it
really means when the Apostle Paul says such things as 'our
old man is crucified with him', 'I am crucified with Christ'
and 'I die daily'. The reason the old man is crucified, is
simply because through the experience of being born again
spiritually, we become new creatures in Christ Jesus, with a
whole new outlook on life. Our hearts and our minds are
totally 'rewired' to conform to the Will of God. Our former
lives of sin and rebellion are a thing of the past if we are
truly born anew and remain yielded to His Will:

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are become
new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

"For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may
instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ."
(1 Corinthians 2:16)

"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that
exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing
into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;"
(2 Corinthians 10:5)

Despite all that we do for the Lord, we must never allow our
own pride to exalt us above our brethren, as if we are more
righteous than them because we are doing more for the Lord.
As Jesus clearly taught, no matter how much we do for Him,
we are still unprofitable servants who have simply done that
which is our duty to do. As such, we should not be lords
over God's heritage, but rather examples to the flock:

"So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things
which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants:
we have done that which was our duty to do."
(Luke 17:10)

"Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being
ensamples to the flock." (1 Peter 5:3)

With these verses, I am going to bring this short article to
a close. I hope that it has given you a better understanding
of what it means to be crucified with Christ. It is not a
part of our Atonement; it is part of our daily service to
Him. If you are interested in reading more about this topic,
I encourage you to read such articles as 'The Parable Of The
Sower: Salvation And Service', and 'What Is God's Will For
My Life'. May God bless you, keep you, and provide for you
as you serve Him with your whole heart.
